Kenya and China held an inaugural ceremony marking the first time Kenya has officially made it possible for local businessmen to export dried 'deep-sea anchovy', locally known as 'Dagaa', to China on the 23rd of this month.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
The first batch, a total of 27 boxes of dried 'deep-sea anchovy' was shipped by air to China, and will be showcased during the third China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo scheduled to open by the end of June in Changsha, southern China's Hunan Province.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
The Cabinet Secretary of Kenya's Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Salim Mvurya Mkala, said at the inauguration ceremony that "It's a very historic moment because it's the first time that an export of this nature has been made."
He added that Kenya and China have maintained friendly relations for a long time, and have cooperated well in different economic fields and development projects. Noting that in the future, the blue economy will open up new areas for Kenya-China cooperation.
Daniel Mungai, the Senior Assistant Director of the Kenya Fisheries Service, said that more Chinese companies are welcome to invest and operate in Kenya.
Zhang Yijun, the Public Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, wrote in a congratulatory letter that the export of Kenyan dried anchovy to China is the latest breakthrough in the export of Kenyan wild aquatic products to China since the signing of the protocol on inspection, quarantine, and veterinary hygiene requirements for Kenyan wild aquatic products to China.
"This will increase the income of local fishermen and promote the development of Kenya's blue economy." He wrote.
The company that facilitated the first batch export, Jinzai Food Group Co., Ltd., invested and built a factory in Kenya in 2018.
Jinzai Food Group Co., Ltd., relies on Kenya's favorable marine environment and abundant anchovy resources.
It purchases fish caught by local fishermen and processes them into dried fish to export them to China.
